Summer

Summer Goal

For the past year or so, I’ve been trying to get my Etsy shop back up and running. I had so far made a total of 5 sales on it, which I guess is pretty okay! I’ve sold a lot of paintings not off of my Etsy which really makes me want to put more on the website page I have!

Painting has been a hobby of mine for a while. When I started out, I thought I did some really great things with paint (but looking back I think wow, that was pretty messy actually). But that’s what growth is all about!

So, my goal for the summer is to paint and post at least one new painting each week to my Etsy page. It can be hard sometimes to think of ideas that will catch the attention of a lot of people. So if anyone has any quotes and stuff that they would really LOVE to see painted on a canvas, let me know! Ideas are the best when they come from the people looking for certain products!

Anyways, today I spent some time updating some pictures on my shop and took some nice pretty photographs of some of the paintings I’ve done! I also painted a couple new canvases, one of which I’m really excited about!

If anyone wants to take a gander, here is the link to my Etsy shop! Any feedback is welcome!

https://www.etsy.com/shop/CalliesCreatives?ref=hdr_shop_menu

And I guess I’ll attach some pictures here as well, since they all aren’t on Etsy yet!

life · Summer

Summer isn’t as good as it used to be

When you were growing up how did you spend your summers?

In the pool. At the beach. With family. Summer camps. Going on vacations. With friends. Disney World. And so on. Now that I am legally an adult, summers seem to have gotten less wonderful. I spend most of the days home alone. I have a job. I have college planning and essays or scholarships to apply for. I have to find a job on campus. I have to apply for loans. Save my money.

Why does being an adult have to suck?

Literally it sucks the fun out of summer.

I tried multiple times to get together with my friends over the course of the summer. In younger years, my parents would have scheduled sleepovers or playdates with my friends with ease. But now that we are all adults, we all have these things called “responsibilities”.

I know right? Gross.

The days I’m free my friends are busy, the days my friends are free I’m busy. It’s a difficult task for sure to figure out a day to see other with two people, never mind four or more friends.

Being an adult is great and all, I just despise it.

All those “responsibilities” like working, schooling, scheduling… it just adds up to being busy busy busy all summer long. Which gets to my main point, summer isn’t as good as it used to be.

Now that I’m older, it’s hard to get excited about doing something when you’ve already spent the past eighteen years doing that. You want to go other places, try new things and find new places to explore. Not return back to the same beach or campground you’ve been to a dozen times growing up.

I’ve come to find that summer, as awesome as I always think it will be, is somewhat a let down. You always except it to be filled with spending time with friends at the beach or finding someplace new to explore or going out in the big city for a night. For whatever reason, as much as you try to do these things, they don’t end up happening (for the most part).

Again with those things called “responsibilities” getting in the way of things.

Even for children growing up today, summer isn’t spent the same way as my generation had it. My generation had it good. We’d go outside and play with side walk chalk or bicycles or on a swing set. Our parents would plan trips out to the zoo or aquariums or some type of kids museum. They’d let us invite friends over for a campfire or sleepover. We were always doing something outside.

But children now? They sit in front of their tablets, inside, on the couch, all day. I have four nephews so last time I was babysitting I thought, wow, it’s a beautiful day. We should go outside on a walk. I finally get the boys off their iPads (mind you they are five and two years old), we literally step outside before they are screaming and crying over bugs and run back inside to play their computer games again.

It just made me sad that they can’t even go outside and enjoy the nice, warm weather and play. Yes it may have been because of the “bugs” (a single dragonfly). But simply the fear of bugs that are completely harmless (dragonflies) means that they haven’t been outside enough to get used to them. He’s five years old and still scared of bugs? When I was five I was catching caterpillars and lady bugs and letting them crawl all over my hands.

I understand that the times are different. But that is exactly my point, people aren’t enjoying the summer months like they used to, especially the young children. People should be enjoying life, outside, going on adventures, experiencing new things. For whatever reason, most people that I know come home from a long day of work and don’t have the energy to go out and see the world. And while I understand that (as well as do it myself), I just feel like I, as well as the majority of other young people are wasting away the best years of their lives tucked up inside a house or working all summer long.

6 Reasons Why You Actually Miss Being on Campus

Despite the excitement of returning home from campus for the summer months, you quickly come to realize all the things you actually miss because you aren’t on campus anymore. It’s been about three weeks since finals ending and I’m already having the Campus Blues.

Here are some of the reasons why you’ll actually miss being on campus this summer.

You’ll miss seeing your friends everyday. Or at least being able to see them as much as you wish. It’s definitely true that you make some of your best friends in college. However, the downside is that they most likely won’t be from your home town. So in the summer months, you simply just end up missing them.

You’ll miss having your own little space. I honestly miss my little dorm room, even though I have my own room at home. I miss the privacy that came with having my dorm room instead of having to let my parents know everything I do.

You’ll miss going on “dates” with your friends (or boyfriend). Trips to the dining halls are a daily occurrence on campus, but now that you’re home? Most of the time you end up eating your meals alone and can’t help but miss the crazy conversations and fun times you had at the dining halls.

You’ll miss making new friends on campus. If you are anything like me, then you are constantly meeting new people and making new friends. Whether it be in a class, in a group or just walking around on campus. You see people you know everywhere.

You’ll miss the groups you joined. Since being on campus, I’ve already started to become involved with other groups and organizations. I’m definitely starting to miss the people and meetings that I got to see and be involved with.

You’ll miss campus events. Whether it be Greek life, a campus club, program council, the resident halls, there was always something going on every day on campus. At home things are a little bit different, meaning there isn’t as much to do. Not being busy is, well, boring.

But have no fear! September is coming around faster than we realize. Move-in day is practically right around the corner. And I can’t wait to be back on campus complaining about the dining hall food or all the assignments I have.

With that said, ENJOY THE REST OF THE SUMMER, it’s not going to last forever.

Finding Dory- Does it Live up to its Expectations?

If you were born in the late 90’s, Finding Nemo was one of the first movies you became obsessed with. When Finding Nemo came out I was about five years old. Now I am nineteen. Over the course of the past fourteen years, this is probably the most excited I have been for a movie to be released. To this day, I quote the Finding Nemo movie.  I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve said “He touched the butt” or “P.Sherman 42 Wallaby Way Sydney!” and “You guys made me ink”. Literally our blog email is named after Finding Nemo. Finding Nemo was all around just a quotable, fabulous movie from my childhood. With that being said, of course the Finding Dory release date has been on my calendar for months. This past Friday (actually some theaters were showing it on Thursday) was the official premiere date and I could not have been more excited. Honestly, the preview for this movie practically had me in tears. In case you haven’t seen it, or somehow survived without even hearing about this miracle movie, here is the link for the preview! ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKJA-VLpiCo )

I don’t want to give away too much of the movie in detail so first I’m going to give you a character breakdown for some of my favorites from the new movie!hank.jpg

First off, there’s Hank. Hank is an octopus who only has seven arms, referred to as a septopus. Hank is probably one of Dory’s biggest supporters throughout the movie. He definitely became one of my favorite new characters. He comes off a bit rude at first but Dory helps him to find more happiness in life. He is a major role in the movie.

rudder and flukeThese guys are named Rudder and Fluke. These sea lions may seem like a threat at first, but they are a huge help to Marlin and Nemo when they need help. They are also very knowledgable about the Aquarium.

FINDING DORYMeet Becky. Becky is a bird who seems pretty silly and well, dumb. She doesn’t make many appearances, but she leaves a mark on the movie for sure! She is called upon by the sea lions to help Marlin and Nemo when they are in a bind. Marlin may doubt her abilities, but she ends up being a trustworthy bird they can call for when they need help.

jenny and charlieOf course, we can’t forget Charlie and Jenny. I bet you won’t be able to guess who these two are. These two lovebirds- love fish?- are better known as Dory’s parents. They never gave up on Dory and show just how supportive parents are of their children.

bailey and destiny

Lastly, there’s Bailey the Beluga whale and Destiny the Whale shark. Destiny was one of  Dory’s childhood friends before she got lost. Bailey lives in the tank next to Destiny and becomes one of Dory’s assistants when finding her parents and one of her new friends.

With the introduction of a few new characters, I’d also like to add a list of some of the old characters they brought back from Finding Nemo!

These characters include…

dory1

Dory  (obviously) along with a new and improved, younger baby Dory.

marlin and nemo.jpg

Marlin and Nemo

3

Mr. Ray and the School Fish

2

Crush and Squirt

4And even a short appearance of the Fish Tank Friends at the end.

Here are my thoughts on Finding Dory vs Finding Nemo.

What is it about?

Finding Dory is (obviously) about Dory’s journey across the big ocean blue (0r the big ocean life rescue) to find the family she had lost, just as Marlin did when Nemo was taken from the drop off in Finding Nemo. I felt like the beginning of the movie was a bit rushed while traveling across the ocean but I understood why after it went on further to explore the rescue center. Plus, that would just be Finding Nemo all over again.

This movie overall made me laugh multiple times. I thought that Baby Dory was the most adorable little fish ever. Finding Dory definitely brought a good message to its viewers about the importance of family, and also friends who are considered family. It also brought up how friends can encourage you to do things you never thought you could do and how supportive they are. I find myself now asking, “What would Dory do?”. For example, how Dory was there for Marlin the entire trip across the ocean to find Nemo. And then in turn, Marlin and Nemo were there for Dory when she traveled across the ocean to California for her parents.

One factor that I really loved that this movie brought in were fish who have some from of disability. I feel like more and more children, aare born or suffer with a disability today. Although Nemo and Dory brought some sense of this in the first movie, Finding Dory takes it to a whole new level. Every fish in the marine life rescue center have some from of disability. However, these fish were still able to overcome difficult challenges and obstacles they never believed they could achieve. For example, Dory suffering from Short term memory loss. Nemo who has a smaller fin. Hank who lost a tentacle previously. Bailey who suffered a head injury. Destiny, who has a hard time seeing objects in front of her. And so on. The overall message of being able to accomplish their goals is a great one for children, and even adults, who suffer with disabilities like the fish!

I also loved their emphasis on Rescue, Rehabilitation, and finally Release. It is important with our climate change and water pollution that we take care of not only our planet, but the animals and creatures living on it. Even Dory got tangled up in some plastic during her journey across the ocean. It is important to nurse these injured animals back to health, but it is also important to release them back to where they belong, in the ocean- not aquariums or fish tanks!

Finding Dory had a bunch of references to Finding Nemo, which I loved (Just Keep Swimming, You made me ink, etc). Without giving anything important away for those who have yet to see this movie, I loved it. It lived up to all the expectations expected after fifteen years (although the movie says it has only been one) of waiting. There are a bunch of new quotable things to reference to for the next fifteen years!

Let me know what your favorite part from Finding Dory was in the comments!

Remember, Just Keep Swimming…
